πŸ”Œ Crimping and Difference Between Crossover and Straight-Through Cable

Crimping Straight-Through Cable vs Cross-Over Cable

A crimping tool is used to attach RJ-45 connectors to Ethernet cables. The difference between Straight-Through and Cross-Over cables is the wiring order of the colored wires.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Group 1 Devices

Examples: Computers (PCs), Servers, Routers

Group 2 Devices

Examples: Switches, Layer3 Switches..

Straight through - Different group devices
Cross over - Same group devices..

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Straight-Through Cable

Used to connect different devices, such as:

  • PC ↔ Switch
  • PC ↔ Router
  • Switch ↔ Router

Both ends use the same standard (usually T568B).

T568B Wiring Order (Pin 1 to Pin 8)

PinColor

8Brown
End A (T568B)           End B (T568B)

2 Orange ---> 2 Orange
3 White/Green ---> 3 White/Green
4 Blue ---> 4 Blue
5 White/Blue ---> 5 White/Blue
6 Green ---> 6 Green
7 White/Brown ---> 7 White/Brown
8 Brown ---> 8 Brown

Cross-Over Cable

Used to connect similar devices, such as:

  • PC ↔ PC
  • Switch ↔ Switch (older devices)
  • Hub ↔ Hub

One end uses T568A, the other uses T568B.

T568A Wiring Order

8 Brown ---> 8 Brown

Crimping Steps

4
  1. Strip about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the cable jacket.
  2. Untwist the wire pairs.
  3. Arrange wires according to T568A or T568B.
  4. Straighten and trim the wires evenly.
  5. Insert wires fully into the RJ-45 connector.
  6. Verify wire order.
  7. Use the crimping tool to crimp the connector.
  8. Test the cable with a cable tester.
